Fused Glass Vetra Fossols Class Saturday November 7th from 11-1 pm at The Ormond Memorial Arts & Gardens Museum
Vitra Fossil (often called fossil vitra) is a kiln-formed fused glass art technique. Artists place real organic materials—such as leaves, ferns, or flower petals—under or between sheets of glass, coat them in powdered glass or frit, and fire them in a kiln. The intense heat burns away the plant material entirely, leaving behind a permanent, detailed glass imprint or "fossil" of the plant's shape and veins. Vitra is a word that refers to glass. So, basically one creates an artificial imprint fossil in glass.
In this class you will be using the following under the supervision of LC and Tommy Tobey of Dream Artglass, to create Vitra Fossils. All of the materials below will be p
• Plant leaves from the Ormond Memorial Gardens
Leaves that lay flat are ideal. Fern leaves provide great results. Plant leaves on branches that are no more than 1/8th inch thick also work very well.
• Three Pre-cut COE 96 Oceanside fused glass
For this tutorial we will be working with three pieces of glass of the following sizes:
4x8,4x4 & 6x6.
• Glass powders
A combination of opaque and transparent powders will be used to allow for depth. We are going to stay true to the natural palette for leaves and use mostly greens and browns.
• Fiber paper
(1/8th inch thick). This needs to be slightly larger than the piece of sheet glass.
• Unscented Hairspray
This will be used to spray on each leaf and act as an adhesive
• Small Powder sifter & Disposal Face Mask
This sifter will be used to apply the glass powder with a very special technique, anytime you are using glass powdered we suggest you wear a mask to prevent you from breathing in the glass powder.
